Listen to the audio guide

Since his childhood, Jean Jacques Waltz was interested in Arts. This passion was supported by his father, who was the curator of the Unterlinden museum. The Alsatian artist went in Lyon for the prestigious école des Beaux-Arts, set up in 1756 and still in functions nowadays. During his years of study, he learned to develop techniques thanks to different styles like Art Nouveau, he participated in a project of advertising, or also aquarelles of landscapes .

For his final exam, he decided to paint a still-life of a bunch of roses. We can see the very realistic style of Hansi. Thanks to this task, the judges wanted to check his technique and his sense of observation. So, we can appreciate the precision of the details for petals, for shadows as well as for creases of the fabric.

We can notice the signature of the canvas which is "J-Jacques Waltz". Indeed, the young artist choose his pseudonym Hansi only in 1907.
