the Alsatian uneasiness

After the German departure, being Alsatian became for some people an uneasiness. In "Vous trouvez cela étonnant le Malaise Alsacien ?" dated from 1928, Hansi show the real difficulty to be Alsatian at this time because people were divided in three groups : pro-Germanics, pro-French, pro-Independence.

We can focus on many elements : a young girl is front of table in a traditional house, the window is hidden by a curtain and is also padlocked. A man try to give  her a spoon of liquor. If we look closer, we can see that on the four bottles is represented an ideology that people try to impose to Alsatian : bilingualism, regionalism, Germany and finally Communism. The curtain represent the tradition. We can also notice the presence of big books. We can read on one of them " Special legislation of Alsace and Lorraine".

The painting has been made during a dark and sad period for Hansi. The artist shows a negative side and express his delusion that we can feel in watching his work. Indeed, he was disappointed and dissatisfied of the French politic. This delusion will lead him to quit his political commitment. This bad period is more difficult for Hansi because his father past away and he was still affected by this loss.
