the cloister of the Underlinden museum
Listen to the audio guide
This drawing was achieve with a pencil in September 1921. This canvas is interesting because Jean Jacques Waltz was, like his father, the curator of the Unterlinden museum. This is the biggest museum of the town and it welcomes everyday a lot of visitors. Indeed, Unterlinden Museum is one of the most popular provincial museums of France. Especially thanks to the Retable d'Issenheim, which was put back together thanks to Hansi when he was the curator.
On the drawing, we can observe the cloister of the old convent with his specific gothic architecture style which appeared in the 12th century. Nowadays, the cloister is still open to visitors and the statue of Schongauer, at first in the middle of the garden of the cloister is now in a gallery to protect her from the eventual damages, but also for visitors who can watch her with more attention.
Schongauer gave his name for the Société Schongauer which is the association of all the volunteers for the conservation of the museum. The Hansi's father, André Waltz, is the designer of an ex-libris for the association.
